Your Money is Safe and Sound at TCCU

We would like all of our members to know that TCCU is operating safely and soundly according to our most recent annual examination by the State of Michigan. We display our financial statements in the lobby each month for our members to view. As you can see, we have money to lend so there is no credit crisis at TCCU. All deposits are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for up to $250,000, just like FDIC. While we are not immune to the current troubled economy, we have been able to control our losses in the form of conservative lending. Most of the losses in the mortgage industry come from subprime lending (low credit scores or people with very high debt ratios). TCCU does not participate in subprime lending. It may be another rocky year with our delinquency. With more losses from repossessions and bankruptcies, we may be forced to lower dividend rates or raise loan rates slightly to compensate for these losses. If you are experiencing a financial hardship with your loan, we urge you to come and speak with our staff to see if we may be able to help. That is what we are here for! We have withstood the American economy's ups and downs for the past 54 years. Our management is confident that we can continue to survive through the current economic crisis.

Frauds / Scams

NEW DEBIT CARD SCAM as of 12-21-09

We have had several calls regarding members receiving text messages from phone # 1-866-407-4757. The message tells them "This is Tri-Cities CU calling to let you know your ATM card has been suspended. To reactivate call 1-866-407-4757."   This number has been shut down; however the text messages continue with new 800 numbers.  DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS TEXT MESSAGE!!!   We will never send you a text message.

March 27, 2009 - Jury Duty phone scam (resurfacing from 2004)

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. They say they are calling to warn you that a warrant is being issued for your arrest because you failed to show up for jury duty.  If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant.  They may also ask for banking info so they can supposedly "direct-deposit your jury duty payments in the bank."  Do not give out any of this information!   The fraud has been reported so far in numerous states.  The callers use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.   Check it out here: http://www.fbi.gov/page2/june06/jury_scams060206.htm    And here: http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp    Also here: http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/j/jury_duty_scam.htm

March 27, 2009 - HUD Scam (given to us by a credit union in Lansing and we do have copies of the postcard)

A member received a postcard with the title, "Notices of HUD Rights" at the top. This postcard lists a toll-free foreclosure line to call (1-888-568-6026). It also indicates that "time is running out" to enter into a repayment plan. On the backside of the postcard it states the following:

"As of January 19, 2001, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) mandated that all borrowers who had loans governed by their loss mitigation guideline be informed as to their rights to repayment programs. There may be other options for those not governed by these guidelines. If you qualify, these programs will allow the foreclosure to be stopped and the past due payments to be placed at the end of the loan or paid over time. For information on what options may be available to you, call the toll-free hotline as soon as possible."

The member is having trouble making their mortgage payment and when they received this postcard they assumed it came from HUD. They called the number and signed up for some sort of service that required them to send in $2,000. After the money was taken out of the member's account, the member brought the postcard in to the credit union.

The postcard does state things about HUD, but on the front it says "Courtesy of Foreclosure Relief Specialists" and also on the back, in small print, it gives a statement basically stating they are not associated with HUD or their lender.
